The Chinese birth calendar is a gender prediction tool for expectant parents. It’s based on traditional Chinese medicine and the lunar calendar.

To use the calendar, you enter the mother’s birthday, then the birthday of the child – or the expected birthday of the child. You can test the Chinese birth calendar yourself using your mother’s birthday combined with your own birthday. If that didn’t work, check the birthday of your friends, siblings, or other family.

Alternatively, you can use the date of conception to narrow down the gender of your child. Typically, the date of conception is calculated by subtracting 266 days from the expected due date.

Where Does the Chinese Birth Calendar Come From?

The Chinese birth calendar purportedly traces its history back hundreds of years in China. The calendar was a closely-guarded secret by emperors of the Qing dynasty. They did not show the chart to others, but kept it for their own predictions. The emperors used it to make important dynastic decisions – like whether their next child would be a future emperor or empress.

Towards the end of the Qing Dynasty, China went through the Boxer Rebellion. During this time, foreign powers looted the empire’s prized exotic treasures. The Chinese birth chart ended up in England. The King translated the chart and kept it (mostly) a secret.

Eventually, the chart made its way to the hands of a professor in Austria. Later on, a Chinese scholar visited the professor and spotted the chart, then brought it back to its homeland.

How Does the Chinese Birth Calendar Work?

The Chinese birth calendar relies on lunar cycles to predict the biological gender of your baby. There are two parts to the chart:

  • The lunar age when the baby is conceived
  • The lunar month of conception

Using this information, you can accurately predict whether your child is a boy or girl. However, some people who really believe in the Chinese birth calendar will time the conception based on this information. You can choose when to conceive a baby based on your desired gender, for example.

Online, you can find charts that give you the best possible time to conceive a baby boy or girl for this year. Websites keep track of this Chinese birth calendar data, then use it to recommend specific dates of conception. Obviously, to give yourself the best chance of conceiving your desired sex, you’ll want to conceive right in the middle of the dates.

In 2017, for example the best time to conceive a boy is between May 26 and November 27 for mothers born between February 6, 1989 and January 26, 1990.

Try the Chinese birth calendar chart yourself to see if it knows your gender. Some reports online claim the chart has a 70% accuracy rate.
